Pat has sweetened this evening concert with 2 of Vancouver's finest jazz musicians; Bill Coon, guitarist/composer extraordinaire and Michael Creber, one of BC's most sought-after piano and keyboard players. vocal workshop Hailed as “a marvellous Canadian jazz singer who has staked out unique terrain for herself” (EjazzNews), Vancouver´s Karin Plato has a breezy, swinging style and melodic sensibility that bring new life to classic gems. Her clear-as-a-bell diction and sensitivity to lyrics are a treat. A Juno nominee for her vocals, Karin is also a gifted songwriter, and her compositions stand comfortably among standards on early recordings such as Blue Again and The State of Bliss, and on her wonderful new double CD, Out of Town. With Chris Sigerson piano and Doug Stephenson bass.

Karin will work with you to “Get the Most Out of a Song”. Focus on interpretation of lyrics, ideas for improvisation, phrasing and arranging, while developing your unique style.

drum workshop SWARM offers a unique hands-on experience full of fun, movement and music. The workshops are tailored to suit the ages of the participants from elementary schools up to master classes. We teach people some of the basic rhythms and movements from the SWARM show culminating in everyone dancing and drumming around in unison. The participants learn to mimic the many rhythms, vocal calls and crazy physical gestures of the lead drummer. The more advanced members of the drum circle get an opportunity to lead the drum circle, building confidence and dismantling the hyarchy of the teacher-pupil relationship. The workshops naturally reinforce the value of teamwork and encourages community bonding through a simple fun structure of collaborative group activity that encourage's individual spontaneity.

sunday brunch This group of fine seasoned Sunshine Coast musicians are back this year on the main stage to start the day and play jazz like it was in the 1950s, 60s and 70s with driving jazz hits by John Coltrane, Miles Davis, and Horace Silver, mixed in with beautiful ballads by Duke Ellington, George Gershwin, and others. This with a mix Featuring Ken Grunenberg on tenor sax, Carl Montgomery on alto sax, John Frederickson on trumpet, Bryan Airth on trombone, John Parker Toulson on piano, Boyd Norman on bass and Tim Enns on drums.

The Coast Jazz Septet will be swinging on the jazz classics, standards and some original tunes to kick start your day of live jazz in Dougall Park.
PK3 JAZZ TRIO

PK3 Jazz Trio The PK3 Jazz Trio is based around great feel and interesting and intricate arrangements. Based in Vancouver, the sound of the PK3 Jazz trio is influenced by Oscar Peterson, Ahmad Jamal and Thelonious Monk. With extensive experience performing at jazz festivals, including the Vancouver International Jazz Festival. This talented trio is Paul Miyai on keyboard, Karlis Silins on bass and Kristian Braathen (with roots on the Sunshine Coast) on drums. They met during their studies at Capilano University and have performed together over the course of the last 10 years.

hot club of mars Celebrating Gypsy Jazz guitarist Django Rhinehart's 100'th birthday, Vancouver's Hot Club of Mars will fill the park with their high energy tribute. The band has been swinging for a few spins around the sun — a dozen earth years or so — though things really started heating up when performance songwriter, Deanna "D" Knight landed on the red planet in 2002. The lovely and talented chanteuse "D" adds a magic sparkle that really brings these wonderful old tunes to life with style, power and grace. And she writes her originals with as much depth and pizzazz as when she delivers them! Joining vocalist Deanna Knight are Mark Dowding (sax, flute & harmonica) Don Kellett (rhythm and lead guitar) Charlie Knowles (bass), Tom Neville (fiddle and mandolin) and Steve "Bugzy" Szabo (rhythm guitar)

BRAD TURNER TRIO

brad turner trio Formed in 1996 by two time Juno winning artist Brad Turner, the Brad Turner Trio has been a mainstay on the Vancouver jazz scene ever since. Performing with a musical empathy for each other that comes only with time and dedication to a shared artistic vision, the members of the group (Brad Turner, piano; Darren Radtke, bass; Bernie Arai, drums) have crafted a sound drawing upon classic jazz piano trio influences (Bill Evans trio, Ahmad Jamal Trio, Keith Jarrett trio, Chick Corea's trio of the mid 1960s) as well as more contemporary musical sources (electronica, new music and improvisation, world music). This current project sees the group exploring the standard jazz repertoire and making it their own.

Vancouver-based Brad Turner is one of Canada's most prominent and prolific jazz artists. An award-winning trumpeter and composer, he is also a very gifted jazz pianist and drummer. Hailed by the noted Canadian jazz writer Mark Miller as "a kind of Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock and Keith Jarrett all rolled into one,"



SWARM

SWARM SWARM presents musical and theatrical shows of invented instruments, experimental world music and intense physical choreography. The performers jump and spin about the stage twirling large-scale industrial drum sculptures. They evoke primal rhythms from the drums and ethereal soundscapes from a wide range of musical sculptures. The mesmerizing contemporary collage of music, movement and mass, thrills audiences of all ages. Visual artist and musician, Bill Wallace, is the founder and director of SWARM. He designs and constructs all the instruments which include drum sculptures, longstrings, marimbas, water gongs, vacuum whirligigs, tuned artillery shells, musical body costumes, and parachute projection screens. Core members, Daniel Lunn and Wayne Mercier, with founder Bill Wallace create the visceral theatrics of SWARM. The one-of-a-kind instruments, the movements they invoke and the creative collaboration of the SWARM troupe propels percussion theatre to new heights.

the idlers From their seaside hometown of St. John's, Idlers have been loading and unloading the great green pickle-van to bring their foot moving skank and polit-reggae-ska-rock to cities and towns from coast to coast and everywhere in between. With anything from a 7-piece onslaught of sound to a squat and groovy 11, Idlers conscious sound has earned the group fantastic reviews for their 2007 release Corner and their latest release, Keep Out. And look out they are coming to the Roberts Creek Hall!

Members include Mark Wilson - vocals/trumpet, Pahl Schiralli-Earle - guitar, Craig Millett - guitar, Erin Best - vocals, Luke Power - keys, Chris Power - drums, Aneirin Thomas - bass, John Duff - trombone, Susan Evon - alto sax, Chris Harnett - tenor sax, Curtis Andrews - percussion.

creek big band The Creek Big Band is made up of unpaid volunteer musicians who contribute their time and talent for the benefit of Sunshine Coast music students and audiences. The money earned from their paid performances goes toward scholarships for Sunshine Coast students going on to further music studies, and toward miscellaneous band expenses.

The Creek Big Band is always looking for additional gigs, and encourages you to book the band for your next dance, party, or other extravaganza for which you wish to have some great swing, jazz, and dance music.

celso machado 2008 Juno Award winner, Celso Machado and his family, is a local resident on the Sunshine Coast. Virtuoso Brazilian guitarist, percussionist, and composer, Celso brings joy to his audiences with his subtle mixture of musical inspiration and irresistible rhythm. For forty years Celso Machado has been performing on concert stages throughout Brazil, Western Europe, Scandinavia, Canada, and the United States. Considered one of the most versatile and exciting musician/composers of Brazilian music today; his guitar technique is but one of his passions; his gift for making music out of anything and everything around us is his mission in life. Celso will be joined in the spectaular setting of Winegarden Park by Stan Gubiotti, vocals/mandolin and percussionist Liam MacDonald.

WALTER MARTELLA QUARTET

walter martella quartet Walter Martella is a Powell River musical phenomenon. A pianist, trumpeter, accordionist, conductor and composer, he is one of the great gems of the Sunshine Coast and has a dedicated fan base to prove it. Walter has taken the stage with many other world class musicians, including Don Thompson, Tom Keenlyside, Phil Dwyer, Dave Robbins, Alan Matheson, Rene Worst, Henry Young, Rick Killburn, Keith Copeland, to name just a few. His musical versatility has him equally comfortable from classical through rock, but his first love is jazz.

Walter will be joined by other fine Sunshine Coast musicians, Paul Steenhuis, guitar/bass, Graham Ord, sax/flute/percussion, and Barry Taylor on drums.

THE RAKISH ANGLES

rakish angles Blending stringband tradition and contemporary composition The Rakish Angles weave an intricate tapestry of mostly original instrumental "Oldtime/Latin/Gypsy-Grass." While the individual members of the quartet bring a wide range of musical backgrounds and experience to the band The Angles are collectively influenced by the music of David Grisman, Bela Fleck, and Django Reinhardt. The debut album consists of 13 tunes all written, arranged and produced by the band which capture the exuberance and creativity of their live show. The Rakish Angles are: Boyd Norman (Bass), Serena Eades (Violin), Dan Richter (Guitar) and Simon Hocking (Mandolin). This local band are building their credits with being nominated for a 2009 Canadian Folk Music Award for "Instrumental Group of the Year!" and their album is a finalist for Instrumental Album of the Year by the Indie Acoustic Project Awards! ... way to go Angles!
